The Complete Pitcher, part 1

The game of baseball is in a "glass half empty or half full" era.  Interest and popularity on social media and throughout the internet seem to be flourishing.  Folk heroes live within the pages of Instagram and TikTok, showing amazing displays of physical talent for all to see 24/7.  It is interesting to watch young players showing each other the many posts from social media celebrities at a practice or before a game.  I'd consider that "half full"...

Who, out there, can throw strikes???

The reality often is that these internet celebrities (glass half full) are in fact facing the same struggles, failures, and frustrations that most all of us are in our everyday baseball grind (glass half empty).  Could it be that their short 15 minutes of fame is more satisfying (and easier to attain) than searching for self-improvement on the mound or at the plate? Is posting a video necessarily wrong?  I don't believe so.  Are they necessary?  I guess it depends on who you ask and what the motivation is.

Who can figure it out in the middle of the game?

Truthfully, most any baseball coach can keep players busy with enough drills to last a full season and longer.  Think of the list of tools, including:

Medball, plyoball, videos, apps, band work, agility drills, working with shoes off, eyes closed, Rapsodo, Trackman, Pocket Radar.

It is somewhat helpful to keep pitchers busy with drills, followed by studying their results with metrics.  There is some value to it.

Pitching is you and the batter - that's it.  How are you going to get that guy out?

Baseball is a competitive sport, that requires an competitive mindset.  Pitching is a mental challenge that supersedes all metrics.  In other words, if you can't compete, you will have trouble getting on the mound.  Think about the NCAA Transfer Portal - a very popular topic for college coaches, players, and their families these days.  This is a tool for players to find another college program if they are not satisfied with their current situation.  Many college coaches heavily recruit off of the portal, searching for the missing pieces, more than searching for incoming freshmen.  Yes, metrics listed on the player's profile are important in the process.  That opens the door and gets coaches interested.  But it doesn't guarantee that a pitcher will get more playing time at the new program.  Changes in mental and physical skill set need to change.  If these remain the same, there is a good chance pitchers and coaches will see a similar result.  In fact, there are many players who have bounced to multiple college programs during the eligibility years.

Maybe its not the program?

The Complete Pitcher handles adversity with calm, competes while remaining under control, and never quits on himself.... He understands that pitching is always a work in progress and it is not easy.  It is a game of adjustments and change, often in real time under extreme pressure.

There are techniques and skills the Complete Pitcher consistently works on.  Keep looking on the website for more discussion about these and more.
